I heard that all the film grain was scrubbed from this release. So, I was worried whether or not I would like it. I love old film movies. Grain never bothered me. It is part of the charm of old movies. But this version does not suffer at all from waxiness or artifacts that usually accompany film grain scrubbing. They apparently have a new process for removing film grain. And it really works. This looks like it could have been shot in 4k digital yesterday. It is a huge upgrade from the 2017 bluray release I have. The opening sequence where they find Ripley in stasis, is so much clearer and sharper. You can see through all that smoke and into the shadows. Every spot of frost sparkles. What struck me is how the textures really stand out. The outside shots on LV426 look like you could just walk into the tv and onto the set. Smooth metal looks slick and hard, if that makes sense. Every pore, every drop of sweat, every whisker, every hair, every pimple is visible in close ups. And the sound is awesome as well. I don't have Dolby Atmos but it sounds incredible in Audyssey DSX on my relatively old Onkyo surround sound system. Unless you are just an unmovable purist when it comes to film grain, you will not be disappointed with this release.
I did not get this right away so I was watching some of the early reviews. Was a bit worried as some reviews are not good. My experience was nothing but spectacular. Maybe it's the tv they are using. I am using a TCL QM8 and with Panasonic 4K Ultra player. Once the Dolby Vision kicks in.. WOW! It still looks great without it but I can typically see what it looks like w/o Dolby Vision for 1-2 seconds and then it kicks on with the QM8. I can only speak for the 1990 special edition version as that is the only one I watch these days. Once you see the special edition you really can not go back! lol Also watched the bonus disc 3. That is a standard bluray but it is packed with all sorts of cool behind the scenes stuff. LOVE THIS!!
